Love On The Line

Seductive, yet naive. But that’s something to like. House-rooted Crazy P has delivered a classic with this.

Sam Sparro - Sam Sparro (2008)

Nostalgia and disco and soul and a good voice. “If you’re not really here
then the stars don’t even matter”
sings the Australian born LA kid Sparro on “Black & Gold” which I consider to be the single of the year.

But the rest of the album is of different cut, mostly funky electro disco beats dominating. At times, he brings Jamie Lidell and Gnarls Barkley to mind. His gospel days are over but he still captures the spirit with “Waiting for Time” and Too Many Questions. Not to mention his soulful and deep voice, kind of mix between Winehouse and Hegarty. “21st Century Soul”, “Cut Me Loose” and “Hot Mess” are the perfect dance funk hits waiting to be unleashed on the dancefloor. And the groovy and drug induced “Cottonmouth” will ooze the moves out of you once you reach the bar.

Sparro, who’s openly gay (in case you we’re wondering), is actually a normal and peace loving citizen who just happens to funk on stage and wear cool weird clothes. By sound and sensibility this album is this year’s “Overpowered” but will definitely have more mainstream impact than Roisin.

A Case of Modern Synth-Disco: Kelley Polar

One of my favourite albums of 2005 was Kelley Polar’s underdog debut “Love Songs of the Hanging Gardens” produced by Morgan Geist of Metro Area (for which he provided strings). A former student of Juilliard (discontinued) and a viola enthusiast has taken a liking towards disco since the age of three when he was in the influence of his sister. Now, in the year 2008 Kelley has followed with a selfproduced synth-filled and strings attached ultimately romantic space pop album I Need You to Hold On While the Sky Is Falling.

It’s hard to find such warmth in synthpop that matches the combination of Polar’s mellow voice, punctual strings and soft synthetic beats. Again mixed by Geist, “I Need You…” doesn’t sound too different from his debut but adds more layers and is generally a bit sadder but fuller sounding. Female voices can be heard as well, bu at times it seems that the overall singing could be improved upon, although it has a distinct singing-when-nobody’s-watching feel to it. If you like Junior Boys and disco, 80’s and synthpop this is for you.

Rating: ★★★★½

Roisin Murphy parukamaania

Mida kujutab endast üks korralik modernsust kehastav koduperenaine/vallaline naine kui ta üksi on? Ängi annab edasi Roisin Murphy uus video singlile “You Know Me Better”, kus ta madonnalikult korduvalt ümber kehastub, siiski efektsemalt. Kuigi lugu on ise selline diskokas, on video üsna aeglane. Ja miskipärast sobivad eri tempod ideaalselt; video tabaks justkui mingit allhoovust. Kostüümivalik särab samuti. Roisin ei paista mööda panevat (või on asi ainult minus).

Cut Copy - Lights and Music

Austraalia discopoppi viljeleva koosluse esikametliksingel uuelt plaadilt “In Ghost Colours” on videoformaati jõudnud. Prantsusmaalt laenatud electrotundlikkus on angloameerikaliku lihtpopiga usutavalt ühes. Tõotab tulla ajatult pop ja truult hea. Bänd on seoses tuuritamistega ka rokilikumaks muutunud; nende eelmine plaat “Bright Like Neon Love” kasutas rohkem kordusi ning polnud vast nii otsekohese kõlaga.

Kathy Diamond - Miss Diamond To You (2007)

“Miss Diamond To You” toob meieni Kathy peamised mõjud soulist, discost ja r&b-st.

See on üks neist albumitest, mida saab korduvalt täispikkuses nautida. Uut pole palju, aga meeldiv siiski. Kodukuulamise funky disko, millest võiks oodata väga häid remixe. Tema MySpace lehel on üleval kuulamiseks “Over”.
