Bruce Willis Is Dead

Flat Beat

The father of “Flat Beat” is on Ed Banger now and has no mercy on either Bruce or the dancefloor. This is rave!

Mr. Oizo has been busy lately with a soundtrack (Steak) and some remixing and appearing on albums with Uffie, Sébastien Tellier and SebastiAn.

Colourful people from Berlin…

…are making soulful electropop. Not that it’s anything new but not everyone’s as catchy as Knixx.

Late Night with Lykke Li

The Swedish darling is cracking the States with her electric voice performing the single “Breaking It Up” live on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. She looks wicked with the megaphone.

Klaxons and dubstep mixed

YouTube Preview Image

The past year’s most notable crossover hit band get remixed by dubstep superstar Skream. We’ll It’s at least as brilliant and unexpected as Rihanna performing with them at the Brits (video).

Edit (29.08): but as a total coincidence, Klaxons are coming to Tallinn on 6th of October. And yes, I’m going! :]

Ladytron will never stop….

…with their forte of synthpop. At least it seems so with every song dropped. Needles to say more - enjoy the video.

Calvin Harris found his place

Well, there are some who dislike his camp electro productions. I, for sure, didn’t fall in love with “I Created Disco” either. One good single which is all about recapturing the 80’s is not enough. In addition, some mediocre productions for Kylie and Roisin - well, still doesn’t show whether he has any exceptional talents.

BUT, now, at least for me, Harris has hit gold with grime favourite Dizzee Rascal. The single “Dance Wiw Me” reached no1 in the UK charts recently. Well, I’ve always loved the UK charts for being dynamic.

Sam Sparro - Sam Sparro (2008)

Nostalgia and disco and soul and a good voice. “If you’re not really here
then the stars don’t even matter”
sings the Australian born LA kid Sparro on “Black & Gold” which I consider to be the single of the year.

But the rest of the album is of different cut, mostly funky electro disco beats dominating. At times, he brings Jamie Lidell and Gnarls Barkley to mind. His gospel days are over but he still captures the spirit with “Waiting for Time” and Too Many Questions. Not to mention his soulful and deep voice, kind of mix between Winehouse and Hegarty. “21st Century Soul”, “Cut Me Loose” and “Hot Mess” are the perfect dance funk hits waiting to be unleashed on the dancefloor. And the groovy and drug induced “Cottonmouth” will ooze the moves out of you once you reach the bar.

Sparro, who’s openly gay (in case you we’re wondering), is actually a normal and peace loving citizen who just happens to funk on stage and wear cool weird clothes. By sound and sensibility this album is this year’s “Overpowered” but will definitely have more mainstream impact than Roisin.

Rating: ★★★★½

Goldfrapp - Happiness

Sorry, I’ve been rather busy as I’ve managed to acquire quite a huge workload for this month. Anyway, until I get back from my little blogging break (few days more), please enjoy Goldfrapp’s latest video. I’m getting anxious as I am going to see them live (finally!) at Sonar festival. :]

Follow-up to The Knife’s “We Share Our Mother’s Health”

Well, not quite The Knife themselves, but the animator behind their superb video, Motomichi Nakamura has produced an animation for the up and coming band Temposhark’s single “Blame“. Above you can see Nakamura’s Chaz & Daz Vinyl Toys and he limits his colours to white, black and red just like The White Stripes.

The sound kind of reminds me of a slightly better yet just an average MTV pop/rock band and I’m mostly posting this for the video (I hope there’s more about them for Nakamura seems to have excellent taste). But Temposhark come from Brighton/London and have just released their debut album “The Invisible Line” which drops names like Guy Sigsworth, Imogen Heap and Martin Glover aka Youth.

Some of the best music…

…that I like at the moment can now be found at vivaindifference.muxtape.com . The muxtape craze takes us all to a good direction - easier to upload and manage and no need to cut/paste your own podcasts (unless you want it for itunes to ipod take-away).

I promise to update it and you’ll be able to follow from the right-hand sidebar as well. And why not make a post about new songs added :p

Some of you might know Swayzak that hail from London and focus on subdued dark house. Well, on their latest album, I’ve found a perfect example of a tech-house song that builds and builds and then, near the end (or the bridge of pop songs), finds a huge climax in a fantastic hook. Swayzak saved the best for last on their latest album Some Other Country released on !K7 last year as “They Return” is the last track on it. You can have a listen once you navigate to my muxtape :]

Estonians dislike house and soul?

Masterfully, Estonians voted the best singer off from the first final of the second season of “Estonia In Search For A Superstar” the local equivalent of X Factor and American Idol.

Keit (pictured on the right), you can cry if you want to, but this is not your party, anymore. Well, on the more “gleeful” side, Anna-Liisa Supp (on the left), one of the best among last year’s contestants, was voted off in a similar case where talent and the performance itself meant little to the public. Maybe they’re too mature for the teenage oriented Superstar show where posing and almost passing for a talent is something to strive for.

Or is it that the house/soul loving part of the audience missed Keit’s performance which was first and then, as they found the general level of talent paper thin, switched the channel never returning. Well it may be the case that they’re poor as well; but I can’t even vaguely imagine who votes anyway. Just friends? Is it then really about having a strong orkut network?

Anyway, I hope that Keit finds her way through (and perhaps emigrates from Big Bad Taste Land Estonia). For instance, Anna-Liisa Supp added a follow-up to her wonderful “Bigger than Everything” on her myspace recently. That’s exactly what happens (good music!) when people get to do what they like/want and dedicate themselves to the cause.

Yes, I wouldn’t have dared to imagine this disappointment of results.

Like a bad nightmare

I wouldn’t post it otherwise, but it has a kind of strange dreamlike quality to it, even reminding of The Shining’s REDRUM. Excepter are from Brooklyn (such a prolific place for good music these days) and sound like dub noise disco, sort of. Or take it as it says on their myspace: “a synthetic protest band engineered to erase cultural distinctions through polarised confusion“.

Well, this is “Kill People” video off of “Debt Dept” released on Animal Collective’s Paw Tracks label. The video isn’t too brilliant, but you can always switch tabs (or if you’re into kitch…). Anyway, seems to me that the American experimental bands are so much better (or at least appear to be as they’re better known) than their European contemporaries at the moment.
